Open to kids ages 4–8
Jr Griffins
6u program
Ages 4–6
Our 6U program introduces the youngest players to the game in a fun, no-pressure environment. Practices start in the fall with ball hockey at Mott Park (Flint, MI) to help kids learn teamwork, stick skills, and the flow of practice without the challenge of skating right away. Once the ice is ready, players hit the rink twice a week for age-appropriate skill development, laughter, and games that keep them excited to come back. The focus is on building confidence, coordination, and a love for hockey.
Jr Griffins
8u program
Ages 7-8
The 8U program is designed for kids who are ready to take the next step in their hockey journey. Starting with ball hockey sessions in the fall, players build their skills and team chemistry before moving to the ice for two weekly practices during the winter season. Practices follow USA Hockey’s American Development Model and are led by certified coaches who emphasize skating, passing, shooting, and teamwork. Players also get the chance to compete in games and jamborees against other 8U teams, making every week a new adventure.
Program Beliefs, Philosophies & Standards
To ensure all players have the best possible experience with the Jr. Griffins, we kindly ask families to follow these guidelines. These rules are in place to maximize coaching focus, create a safe environment, and allow every player to grow both on and off the ice.
General Expectations
-
A parent (or designated adult) must be present at all times during a session. Parents are responsible for fully equipping their player before each practice.
-
Players should be fully dressed 5 minutes before each scheduled session so we can make the most of our ice time.
-
Please take your player to the restroom before putting on equipment.
-
Parents must bring water/hydration for their player every session.
-
Notify the coaching staff (via SportsEngine, text, call, or email) if your player will be late or absent.
-
We understand life comes first — school, church, and family events will always take priority.
Weather & Scheduling
-
Weather cancellations are possible at The Barn’s outdoor rink. Coaches will communicate updates as early as possible. If repeated cancellations occur, we may explore indoor ice rental with families’ input.
-
Coaches are committed to attending every session, but work conflicts may arise. That’s why we ensure multiple USA Hockey–certified coaches are available to maximize ice time.
On-Ice Philosophy
-
Equal Ice Time: At the 6U/8U level, all players receive equal opportunities (average shifts of 90–120 seconds in games).
-
Discipline will first involve a respectful conversation between coach, player, and parent. In some cases, players may be briefly removed from the ice for unsafe or repeated behavior.
-
Parents are fans — not coaches. Please avoid “coaching from the stands.” Encourage your child and trust our staff to guide players positively and respectfully.
Safety & Respect
-
For any safety concerns, please contact a Head Coach immediately. Non-urgent concerns should follow the 24-hour rule to allow for constructive, balanced conversations.
-
Please respect The Barn — clean up after yourself, treat staff kindly, and be mindful of seating so other patrons can enjoy their visit.
-
To maintain safe ratios and locker room space, 8U players will not participate in 6U sessions. This ensures a 1:4 or 1:5 coach-to-player ratio and keeps practices focused.
Extra Opportunities & Volunteering
-
Optional Skill Development Sessions are offered twice a month for 6U & 8U players. These “extra ice” opportunities are a fun mix of practice and stick-n-puck style play.
-
Helping Hands: Parents are welcome to assist in non-coaching roles such as running the game clock or helping with equipment setup and cleanup.
"Parent" should be understood as the designated adult responsible for your player (parent, grandparent, guardian, etc.). Please share these expectations with anyone attending in that role.
